Hockeyville Game at Mile One, September 26th, 2011

Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Eric Fehr, Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredson, and Sergei Gonchar are just some of the NHL stars that are expected to take to the ice at Mile One Stadium on September 26th. The new Winnipeg Jets and the Ottawa Senators will square off in the Kraft Hockeyville game awarded to the town of Conception Bay South for being named Hockeyville 2011.

Newfoundland is becoming a hot bed for Hockey with the return of the American Hockey League to the capital city after a 6 year absence from our province. Such hockey superstars should bring plenty of excitement to the city, and finally some professional hockey at Mile One Stadium.

AHL is Back

The vast majority of the Capital City (and maybe even the Province) is elated that our boy Danny got us a hockey team, and this fall we can look forward to professional hockey (via the AHL) in action at our own Mile One Stadium.

Now it's time to play the name game. The last update on www.vocm.com stated that it's very likely our team will be named the IceCaps. I like the Caps part of the name. It dives into St. John's history and is something that actually is popular. It's the "Ice" part of IceCaps that I question. Is the mascot a big plastic drink container from Tim Hortons. This seems like it could easily be setting us up to be the butt of more "Newfie" jokes.

The official announcement hasn't been made yet though so we can just wait to see what comes of this. Personally, I hope they re-consider this name, but even if they are the 'St. John's IceCaps', they have my support along with the rest of this province. Realistically, if we can support 'FogDevils', we can support anything.
